"A welcome austere moment."
— The Portland Press Herald, November 2014
Inspired by the wit and brevity of György Kurtág's Microludes, each of these tiny "micro-movements" is based on a fragment of material from another short piece. Each "handshake" occurs as I ackowledge the contribution of that fragment before proceeding to compose freely in my own style. Naturally, the language evolves as the contributing works advance through the centuries.
Performed by the Arneis Quartet (Boston), Duo/Trio/Quattro (Portland, OR), Momenta Quartet (NYC), and the Portland Chamber Music Festival (Portland, ME). Recorded by the Daedalus Quartet (Philadelphia).
